I always smell like something. Sometimes its actually perfume. Most days its castile soap and a neutral body spray. When I'm feeling fancy I apply my very mature Aura by Thierry Mugler or my blissful favorite Splendida Iris d'Or by Bvlgari. A lot of time, I smell like bleach, Pinalen and Fabuloso, not necessarily in that order. My scenting is my masterpiece. I thoughtfully combine things like the detergent I wash my clothes in to the air freshener I spray in my car.
That's me and I'm a little extra when it comes to fragrances.
When you want to create a signature scent for yourself, my first suggestion is to only consider what makes you happy. Years ago, it seemed like every person I walked pass was wearing Light Blue by Dolce and Gabbana. Wow what a fragrance! I absolutely love it, but not on everyone. I imagined some mom spraying it on herself just because her kids got it for Mother's Day. Your signature scent, is not a fad. Its totally okay to wear something for 20 years, barring it didn't get discontinued, I wore Cashmere Mist for 5 years straight because I absolutely loved it and still do. Of course I can't stand to wear it. Things change, right?
Signature scents don't have to be name brands. They can be simple things like hair products, essential oils and soaps. I love Oil of Olay Age Defying Soap. It smells delightful, expensive even. Its so strong, that you really don't need a perfume. I went through a patchouli period (didn't you?) where I wore raw patchouli oil morning, noon and night. One time I wore nothing, just my essence au naturale. A signature is your decision based on what you feel like projecting.
So lets say, you have no clue. That's okay. I have some tips for you. This is purely my opinion but it works as I always get complements on my scent.
1. Follow the seasons. In fall and winter, I wear fragrances that are richer and fuller. They are stronger. One reason is its colder and as my body warms me up, the scent is expressed and I love the combination. In the spring time I wear lighter scents, I try to follow what is blooming, carnations, daffodils, hyacinths. In the summer I keep it light. Citrus scents, light musk's, and fruit scents, like strawberries and peaches.
2. If you don't like the scent, don't wear it. It doesn't matter what celebrity is promoting it, how many top ten lists it appears on if it stinks to you, don't wear it. I can't tell you how many times I've worn something that I didn't like only to wash it off an hour later.
That's my take on signature scents, I hope this helps you be fragrantly fabulous!
Smell Me Baby,
Nicole
